Why are some instruments, like the saxophone or trumpet, tuned differently from the piano or guitar?

How is a mandolin tuned?

A mandolin is not tuned like a guitar, but is like a violin, except that it has 4 pairs of strings. The strings are tuned G-D-A-E.
